Young Driver Insurance

If you’re looking for the best car insurance for young drivers, here’s our guide to Marmalade’s flexible insurance options for new drivers

Young Driver Car Insurance options

After you’ve got over the initial excitement of getting your provisional licence or passing your test – the cost of getting on the road can come as a shock – whether you’re looking to insure your own car or get added as a named driver on your parents’ policy!

Fear not, Marmalade have some fantastic new driver insurance options to help you get on the road in a more affordable way – on your own set of wheels or on a parent’s car.

Why is new driver insurance so expensive?

It’s an unfortunate fact that young drivers are statistically more likely to be involved in an accident than more experienced drivers. Young drivers are a higher risk group, and unfortunately, higher risk inevitably equals higher premiums. All is not lost though.

Black box insurance can help young drivers get on the road in a more affordable way – as they can prove themselves as safe drivers and earn a discount at renewal based on their own driving score. Drivers with a black box are also less likely to be involved in an accident, so having one will increase the likelihood that you’ll earn your No Claims Discount!

How to get cheap car insurance for young drivers

Insurance for new drivers is never going to be "cheap" but we can give you tips to reduce the cost of car insurance to make it as affordable as it can be. These tips will help you find the best type of cover for you and should save you a few pennies!

Establish how much you'll be driving
Before you start getting quotes, think about the miles you'll be driving so you pay a fair price for the amount you'll be driving. If you're driving less than 3500 miles per year, you could consider pay as you go car insurance.

Decide if you need a car of your own
Think of how much you'd save if you didn't need to pay to run your own car! If you're living at home, sharing a car with a parent could be a more affordable way to get on the road - plus you could start earning your own no claims ready for when you do get a car of your own.

Drive a small car in a low insurance group
Choosing a sporty turbo charged hatchback may seem appealing, but it will push the price of cover right up. To save money as a new driver, driving a small, less powerful car in a low insurance group, will help keep the price down.

Add an experienced named driver
Adding a parent or experienced driver, who has a clean licence, to your policy could bring the cost of cover down.

Tips to find the best insurance for young drivers

Choose a black box policy
If the young driver is the main driver, black box policies offer fairer pricing for young drivers as they’re proven to reduce the risk of accidents, and allow insurers to offer a price based on how individuals drive, rather than young drivers in general
Consider car sharing
Buying a new car and insurance can be a fair whack – as can get getting insured as a named driver. If the young driver isn’t going to do a lot of miles, an annual policy that allows them to drive the family car could be an affordable option
Get cover on demand
If a young driver is away at uni or school - short term or pay as you go options allow the young person to buy cover in more affordable chunks that fit around their needs. What's more, short term cover can be instant!

Frequently asked questions

Can I save money by getting a parent to insure my car and add me as a named driver?arrow
If the young driver is the main driver of a car, and a parent insures the car in their name with the young person as the named driver, it is illegal and will invalidate the insurance. This practice is called fronting and could be a very costly mistake, and affect your ability to get insurance in the future. Not to mention the fact that you'd get you in trouble with the police!
The best car insurance for new drivers that are the main driver of the car, is an insurance policy in their name to ensure they have the right cover. Adding a parent to the policy can reduce the premium in some cases.
If the car is registered to a parent or guardian, can the young driver be insured as the main driver?arrow
This is a question we get asked a lot. Mum or Dad may have bought a car that they have earmarked for one, or more, of their children to use when they pass their driving test. If the young driver will be the main user, they can take out our Black Box Insurance in their name, and you can leave the car registered to you. If the driver is aged under 22, we do require a parent or guardian to be added as a named driver to the policy.
What is the cheapest car insurance for young drivers?arrow
Finding cheap insurance for new drivers may seem like searching for the Holy Grail, and we wish we could give you a simple, one-size-fits-all answer. Finding the most affordable cover for your needs will depend on your circumstances.
Can you get car insurance for young drivers under £1000?arrow
The short answer to this is yes, particularly if you are considering short term policy or if you are looking at pay per mile car insurance.
However, the average car insurance quote for young drivers in the UK (aged under 25) is £1954*, so if you're looking for an annual policy getting a quote less than £1000 is less likely but you'll be pleased to know that we've written a guide for new drivers on how to save money on car insurance. You're welcome!
When does car insurance get cheaper for young drivers?arrow
The good news is that for many young drivers, insurance starts to get cheaper at the first renewal, provided they have remained claim free, and for each further year claim free the price should improve. Here at Marmalade, we also offer an extra safe driving discount for our safest drivers.
How much is car insurance for a new driver versus a learner driver?arrow
Buying car insurance as a provisional licence holder is often less expensive than buying insurance as a new full licence holder. Young provisional licence holders could pay up to £373 less for Black Box Insurance and £169 less for Named Young Driver Insurance, based on Marmalade annual insurance quotations from 1.01.2020 – 31.12.2020².

If you're going to drive the same car you've been practising in after your driving test, it may be worth buying an annual policy with Marmalade as the price won't go up on passing your test during that year.
Why is car insurance for young drivers with a black box cheaper than without?arrow
The simple fact is that young drivers have very little driving experience and no track record of driving performance. Black box technology not only helps the young driver to be more aware of how they're driving but it encourages improvement, and allows the insurer to offer premiums that reflect how the individual drives. Insurers that offer young driver cover without a black box, don't have the visibility of the driving style and will therefore base their premiums on the overall average risk a young driver poses.
