What type of insurance do young drivers need?

There are different types of insurance available, each offering different levels of cover. Comprehensive cover protects you, any other parties involved should you have an accident and the cost of your car repairs or replacement which means you’ll pay your excess only and can have peace of mind that you won’t have to foot the entire bill yourself.

Other options are Third Party, which covers only the third party if you’re in an accident, and Third Party Fire & Theft, which has the third party covered plus protection if your car is stolen.

We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again, insurance isn’t a one size fits all kind of thing – your cover, and cover how much it costs will depend on your circumstances. Don’t assume that a full annual policy on a car you own is your only option – cover on a parent's car, or temporary car insurance may suit you better.

Car sharing insurance for young drivers

Car sharing insurance allows flexibility for young drivers to get behind the wheel, without needing to invest in a new car. They are standalone policies that sit alongside the main insurance, covering the young driver when they are behind the wheel – meaning there is no risk to the car owner’s No Claims Discount. This comprehensive cover is available on a short-term and annual basis.

Are black box policies cheaper for young drivers?

Black Box Insurance can help young drivers save money as it allows them to prove they are safe behind the wheel when they have little to no driving history. The technology tracks driving behaviours which means that insurers can better judge the level of risk and price the premium more accurately.

The price is then based on how the individual drives, rather than young drivers in general – meaning safer drivers can see the benefit of this at renewal.
