What type of insurance do young drivers need?

If you’re looking for insurance cover that protects you and any other parties involved should you have an accident, comprehensive cover is the best, and often the cheapest option. Comprehensive cover gives you the peace of mind that should you be involved in an accident, your car repairs or cost for replacement will be sorted so you won’t have to foot the entire bill yourself.

Other insurance options are Third Party which, as the name suggests, covers only the third party if you’re in an accident, and Third-Party Fire & Theft which also covers you should your car be stolen.

Car Insurance for Young Drivers

We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again, insurance isn’t a one size fits all kind of thing – your cover, and the cost of your cover will depend on your circumstances. Don’t assume that a full annual policy on a car you own is your only option – cover on a parent's car, or temporary car insurance may suit you better.

There are so many different options to get you cheap insurance - it’s all about finding the right policy for you. Using our handy product finder tools is the quickest and easiest way to save you money on your insurance.

Car sharing insurance for young drivers

The cost of buying a second-hand car has spiralled over the last year creating bigger barriers to young drivers getting on the road. Pair this with fluctuating fuel prices and an increase in remote working - families are seeking more flexible car insurance options.

Car sharing insurance allows flexibility for young drivers to get behind the wheel, without needing to invest in a new car. They are standalone policies that sit alongside the main insurance, covering the young driver when they are behind the wheel – meaning there is no risk to the car owner’s No Claims Discount.

Not only could this be more cost-effective, but it’s also better for our planet too. This comprehensive cover is available on a short-term, pay as you go and annual basis. So, there’s pretty much something for everyone!

Are black box policies cheaper for young drivers?

Choosing black box car insurance is likely to be the cheapest and a great insurance option for new drivers as you have little or no driving history. Our data tells us that our black box insurance customers pay over £300 less than the national average. So, how does this tech make insurance cheaper for young drivers?

    • - This technology is proven to reduce the risk of an accident. Marmalade customers are nearly 3 times less likely to have an accident in their first year of driving versus the national average²!
    • - Reducing the risk being involved in an accident, reduces the risk of a claim in turn. The less an insurer needs to spend on claims, the better the price they can offer their customers. It’s simple really!
    • - The price is based on how the individual drives, rather than young drivers in general – meaning safer drivers earn bigger discounts. Marmalade customers can earn an extra safe driving discount of up to 25% off their renewal (on top of any No Claims Discount earned!)
