What is Learner Driver Insurance?

OneFamily and Marmalade know how important it is for young drivers to get plenty of driving practice to gain confidence for the driving test and beyond! Learner Driver Insurance is an affordable way to get practice in a friend or family member’s car. This comprehensive policy sits alongside the car owner’s policy and covers the provisional licence holder while they are behind the wheel, and during the driving test, if needed.
As the name suggests, cover ends once the learner passes their test – as they’re no longer a learner driver! In Marmalade's annual survey of young drivers, we discovered it takes 6 months on average for a young driver to pass their test. We know one size doesn’t fit all, so we offer flexible options from 30 days to 6 months’ cover to suit everyone.

Good to know if you’re the car owner

Here at OneFamily and Marmalade, we know that if you’re considering insuring a learner on your car, the first instinct may be to call your insurer to add a named driver. This can be expensive, and you may incur an admin fee to add and remove the learner driver, as you’re unlikely to know how long it will take them to pass. There’s also the worry that, if the learner has an accident, you may lose your No Claims Discount.
Learner insurance, from OneFamily and Marmalade, allows you to cover the learner driver from 30 days to 180 days, and top-up when needed. There’s no setup fee, and, because it sits alongside the main insurance, there is no risk to your well-earned No Claims Discount! The good news is that you won’t need to sit on the phone for ages to your insurance company, as Learner Driver Insurance is easy to set up online in minutes. You don’t need to inform your insurer, as the insurance is covering the learner driver rather than being the car’s main insurance.

It’s simple and straightforward

1
Get a quote in minutes
All we need is a few details about the learner driver and the chosen car to give you a quote today!
2
Choose your cover
Choose one of the flexible lengths of cover, from 30 days to 180 days! If the policy comes to an end and more time to practice is needed - you can add 7 or 14 days additional cover.
3
Get behind the wheel
Once you’ve paid online – cover can start instantly, knowing that the car owner’s No Claims Discount is safe.

Frequently asked questions

Can I learn to drive at the moment?arrow
The DVSA advise that learners can practise driving with members of their household or support bubble. However, it must only be for essential journeys. You may leave the home to:

- Shop for basic necessities, for you or a vulnerable person

- Go to work, or provide voluntary or charitable services, if you cannot reasonably do so from home

- Exercise with your household (or support bubble) or one other person, this should be limited to once per day, and you should not travel outside your local area

- Meet your support bubble or childcare bubble where necessary, but only if you are legally permitted to form one

- Seek medical assistance or avoid injury, illness or risk of harm (including domestic abuse)

- Attend education or childcare - for those eligible
If you do leave home for a permitted reason, you should always stay local in the village, town, or part of the city where you live. You may leave your local area for a legally permitted reason, such as for work. It goes without saying that if you are self-isolating you should not leave the house at all (unless it is to get a COVID test).

Is the cover provided by OneFamily or Marmalade?arrow
Good question. OneFamily and Marmalade are working together to provide straightforward and affordable insurance to parents and young drivers. Your insurance policy will be with Marmalade, introduced to you by OneFamily.
What is the policy excess?arrow
You will need to pay the first £250 towards the claim if there is a fire, the car is stolen or you have an accident whilst you're driving.
Can a learner be insured on their own car?arrow
Yes – but not with this policy. This is a short-term policy designed to sit alongside an existing motor policy of a car owned by someone else. Our Black Box Insurance is designed to cover a young driver in their own car before and after they pass!
Who can supervise a learner and how old must they be?arrow
Any driver who is over 25, who currently holds a current valid full UK driving licence, and has done for at least three years, can supervise you. It doesn't even need to be the person who owns the car. Of course, you'll need the permission of whoever owns the car - we're sure you knew that anyway!
