Do I need insurance to supervise a learner driver?

As long as the learner driver has insurance in place, the supervising driver won't need specific cover as they will be covered by the learner's policy, providing they meet the eligibility criteria.

It's important to remember however, if you're allowing a learner to practise in your car, you will still need your own insurance in place for the vehicle, separate to the learner's policy. Supervising drivers must be aged 25 or over and have held a full UK driving licence for at least three years.

Can you insure a car with a provisional licence?

Yes, you can insure a car with a provisional licence. Our Temporary Driver Insurance and Named Young Driver Insurance cover a learner on a family member's, while our Black Box Insurance provides cover on their own car. Remember, insurance is a legal requirement, so you will need to get it in place before hopping behind the wheel.

What does insurance for learner drivers cover?

Here at Marmalade, all our policies are comprehensive so they will cover the car you are driving as well as any third party damage. In addition to this, they will cover the supervising driver to take over in a medical emergency.

The policy will also cover the learner driver during their driving test, however, if you have selected a short term policy, the cover will cease as soon as they pass their test – so they may need a lift home!

Can two learner drivers be insured on the same car?

They sure can. If you've got more than one learner desperate to get in the driver's seat, you can set up two different insurance policies (one for each learner) on the same car, with no fuss. The only thing we can't help with? Deciding who gets to be the first behind the wheel.

Still unsure which cover you need?

While there are some restrictions, learner drivers can get insured on most cars. It's important to bear in mind that the type of car will impact the cost of the policy so if you're hoping for a cheaper quote, a car that is smaller and in a lower insurance group might be the right option for you. Black Box Insurance allows drivers to reflect on their journeys and review where their driving is good and under control, and also where they might be making mistakes, which is helpful for someone who is still learning to drive.

All Marmalade’s insurance policies for learner drivers will cover provisional licence holders during their driving test, provided the DVSA requirements are met. If you choose an annual policy, the cover will continue seamlessly after you pass. However, our short term learner insurance will cease as soon as you pass your driving test – so you will need someone to drive you home!
