The Government is committed to making the roads safer and has launched a consultation to draft new and revised sentencing guidelines, which takes into consideration offenders causing serious injury by dangerous and careless driving.

81% of learner drivers experience bullying from other road users – sign our petition to help make our roads safer.

Dangerous drivers are putting other road users at risk by driving aggressively and abusing learner drivers! Learners and instructors are being subjected to tailgating, being cut up, honking horns and verbal abuse to name just a few. Worryingly, this behaviour is leading to 72% of learners making more mistakes and over two thirds becoming more nervous drivers. 8% have given up driving altogether!

Learners deserve the right to drive without intimidation – so we’ve launched a petition to call on the Government to do more to prevent road users driving dangerously around drivers with L-plates.

100,000 signatures are needed to campaign for change!

To reduce the risk of accidents and protect the safety and wellbeing of learners and instructors, urgent action is needed to prevent this bullying behaviour towards them.

We're aiming to get over 100,000 signatures on the petition so government can debate and consider giving harsher penalties to those who drive carelessly or dangerously around learner drivers.

The survey results suggest that males aged 30-39 are the biggest culprits for bullying behaviour. 68% of respondents said men were behind the wheel and 67% identified those in their thirties.

Unsurprisingly, the majority of abusive drivers were behind the wheel of a car. However, 61% were said to be van drivers and nearly a quarter (23%) were taxi drivers.

These stats we've shared come from a survey we conducted of 1,293 learner drivers, newly qualified drivers and parents (Oct 2021), as well as 407 driving instructors (Apr 2022). You can read full details of the survey in our report on dangerous driving around learner drivers.
