With Volkswagen you can’t lose; you get their standard reliability and robust protection with a sporty, modern look and feel combined with incredible tech on the inside
Volkswagen has been an industry leader for solid engineering and value for money for several decades now. While overall coupe-SUVs have been more costly, this sassy Taigo (pronounced tie-go) is their first venture into this increasingly desirable crossover sector, and there are 3 options available to tailor your needs.
If you’re looking for that certain something to enhance your image as a new driver, the surprisingly spacious Taigo is not only stylish but also packed with many attractive features to make your journeys smoother and impress your passengers.
The good news? You can secure a new VW Taigo with a £500 deposit and we’ll pay towards your first year’s insurance. You can use this to buy insurance from a provider of your choice (of course, we’d love it if you chose our black box insurance, but we don’t tie you in!)
Similar to the T-Cross, the Taigo is based on the Polo supermini’s platform, but sportier with a tall body, sloping roofline, and full-width light bar. From the front, the chic LED light strip extends to the VW logo and loops around the LED headlamps, while the sloping rear is highlighted by the dark red stoplights and another full-length strip light.
The sleek interior features soft seats with plenty of leg and headroom, even in the rear which is surprising for a car with a sloping roof. With plenty of hard black plastics in the car, the plush dashboard is soft to touch and you change the heat controls via the touchscreen rather than physical controls. Boot space is surprisingly large, making the Taigo not only practical but trendy.
Volkswagen describes the Taigo as ‘fully digital and always on’, meaning that the drivers’ display and climate controls are fully digital and you’re able to access streaming services, as well as Apple CarPlayTM, Android AutoTM from Google and MirrorLink®, all from the leather multi-function steering wheel.
You can charge your smartphone wirelessly, and depending on the spec you choose you can access your digital instrument gauge cluster and personalise how you would like to display your driver-assist system. In addition to the Travel Assist cruise control system, there’s also the ability to enable lane-keep assist and emergency braking - all easily accessible from the touchscreen.
The option to take the panoramic sunroof is a no-brainer. Stretching across the entire width of the roof, this elegant and epic tinted glass panel can be tilted or opened fully for maximum sunshine and fresh air exposure, who wouldn’t want that?
Another must-have option for you is Keyless Access; as long as you are within 1.5m of your Taigo you can unlock the boot and doors like a wizard, without touching the key. The key isn’t even needed for ignition, all you do is press a button and you’re off!
You have three Taigos to choose from; Life, Style, and R-Line, and a wealth of customisable options. As for the drive? Well, that good old Volkswagen durability makes for smooth steering, and quiet, stable journeys so you know you are in safe hands. The sporty looks translate to surprisingly perky energy, going from 0-62 in 10.9 which is fast enough for you young ones!
Of course, should you be looking for more power there is the 1.5-litre option which takes that down to 8.3 seconds. You get the choice of two petrol engines and manual or automatic transmissions, plus the standard VW warranty: three years/60,000 miles plus roadside assistance.
Volkswagen have a brilliant reputation for robust, safe and reliable cars and the Taigo doesn’t disappoint. Euro NCAP are yet to test the Taigo, but it's safe to say that due to it being based on the T-Cross and Polo (both of which scored the highest rating), the Taigo will receive excellent scores.
All models include autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assistance and adaptive cruise control. These three features combine in the Travel Assist function. There are plenty of extra safety options should you feel the need to upgrade your Taigo further.
