Policy Excess

What is an excess?

An excess is the amount of money you will need to pay towards any insurance claims you make. A compulsory excess is the amount you have to pay, and this is set by your insurer. Your voluntary excess is the amount you are willing to pay on top of your compulsory excess. Here are two examples of how the excess could work on a basic claim:

Example 1 – If you do not have a young or inexperienced driver on the policy

You have an accident in your car and the cost to repair the car is £2000. If you have a £150 compulsory excess, you would pay £150 towards repairs. Your policy would pay the remaining £1850. Voluntary excesses may apply.

Example 2 – If you have a driver under 21 on the policy

A 20-year-old driver has an accident in your car and the cost to repair your car is £2000. You would have to pay the young driver excess of £295 in addition to your £150 compulsory excess. This means you would pay £445 towards the repairs. Your policy would pay the remaining £1555. Voluntary excesses may apply.
