It’s an unfortunate fact that young drivers are statistically more likely to be involved in an accident than more experienced drivers. Young drivers are a higher risk group, and unfortunately, higher risk inevitably equals higher premiums. Choose a black box policy
If the young driver is the main driver, black box policies offer fairer pricing for young drivers as they’re proven to reduce the risk of accidents, and allow insurers to offer a price based on how individuals drive, rather than young drivers in general

Buying a new car and insurance can be a fair whack – as can get getting insured as a named driver. If the young driver isn’t going to do a lot of miles, an annual policy that allows them to drive the family car could be an affordable option

Can I save money by getting a parent to insure my car and add me as a named driver?
If the young driver is the main driver of a car, and a parent insures the car in their name with the young person as the named driver, it is illegal and will invalidate the insurance. This practice is called fronting and could be a very costly mistake, and affect your ability to get insurance in the future, not to mention get you in trouble with the police! It is simply not worth it. If the young driver is the main driver of the car, they must have an insurance policy in their name to ensure they have the right cover. Adding a parent to the policy can reduce the premium in some cases.
If the car is registered to a parent or guardian, can the young driver be insured as the main driver?
This is a question we get asked a lot. Mum or Dad may have bought a car that they have earmarked for one, or more, of their children to use when they pass their driving test. If the young driver will be the main user, they can take out our Black Box Insurance in their name, and you can leave the car registered to you. If the driver is aged under 22, we do require a parent or guardian to be added as a named driver to the policy.
