New Driver Insurance (family car) FAQs

Here are some of the queries we're most commonly asked. If there is something you would like to know, then take a look through and see if we've answered it here.

What is a No Claim Discount?

It's when you get a reduction in your premium as a reward for having a claim-free record.

Because the policy provides comprehensive cover,
am I insured to drive other vehicles?

No. Because we use the telematics device to monitor your driving, we'll only cover you for the car it's fitted in.

Does the policy cover business travel?

No. The policy doesn't cover business use.

Will this policy cover me as the main driver of the car?

No, this policy is designed for young drivers that borrow their parents’ car for occasional use. Our New Driver Insurance for your own car will cover you as main user of the car and the car is up to 9 years old and 1.4 litres. Get a quote here

Is there a time curfew?

No. Unlike some telematics offerings which offer black box insurance, you are covered to drive any time you like, day or night.

What is telematics?

Also known as black box insurance, telematics utilises a discreet black box which lets us know how you're driving by sending information to us via a GPS signal. The box measures distance, location, acceleration, braking, cornering and average speed and helps us to tailor your renewal premium to your driving style. Read more about telematics here.

How do you know who is driving the car?

You will need to log in to the app and click “start” every time you drive the vehicle to ensure that you are covered for every journey you take, as this is how we know you are driving. You will not be insured while driving if you have not logged in to drive via the app. At all other times we assume the vehicle owner or someone named on the main insurance is driving.

How do you know when I have finished a journey?

Simple. Your journey starts once you have clicked ‘start’ in the app and finishes when the car engine is switched off. So, for example when you set off on a long journey and stop to buy petrol or get a coffee at a service station, you will turn your engine off. This is the end of that part of the journey so you’ll need to click ‘start’ again when you resume your journey and the insurance cover.

Will you monitor my parents’ driving?

No. They can log in and see their journeys if they are interested but, in the nicest possible way, we are not interested in your parents’ driving! Our insurance (and therefore interest in journeys) kicks in once you have clicked ‘start’ in the app and finishes when the car engine is switched off (ie the end of the journey).

Why does my parent have to sign the Policyholder declaration as well?

This policy is unique in that you will be insured on an annual basis to drive a car that is owned by a parent. It’s really important that both you and your parent (the car owner) understand the way the policy works fully, and are both happy.

Why does my parent need to be authorised to make changes
to the policy and receive copies of all communications?

Our New Driver Insurance on a family car is a unique way of insuring a young driver on a parent’s car, long term, without adding them to the policy. As you are driving your parents’ car we have a responsibility to keep the car owner informed, and following feedback from young drivers and parents alike, we want to make it easy for either party to look after the administrative side.

My parents’ are worried about how it will affect their policy. Is it Dual Insurance?

It won’t affect the main insurance at all! This insurance covers is a policy that covers you while you are behind the wheel. Here is the technical bit… Dual Insurance occurs when, in the case of insurance against loss or damage, the same items are insured against a certain risk under more than one insurance policy. Cover is only provided under this policy for you, an occasional driver who is not named on the main insurance. The main insurance covers the vehicle and named drivers - therefore it does not cover the same risk as the main policy.

Am I able to pay my insurance in monthly instalments?

Yes – and the best news is that you can do this without paying any interest! You can pay your premium over 12 months. Marmalade act as a credit broker and introduce you exclusively to Premium Credit Ltd who are the lender.

Am I insured before the box is installed?

No, your policy will not start until the following steps have been completed:

  • We have received copies of your Policyholder Declaration, Driving Licence and V5C logbook
  • The box is installed in the specified car
  • You have gone through the welcome call (when policy documents will be sent and your policy will be activated).

How long does it normally take for the policy to be activated and for me to start driving?

We would expect your policy to commence up to 21 days from your original application, or sooner. If your parent’s car is compatible with the OBD black box device, you will be able to fit the device as soon as you receive it. If you need to have a device fitted by an engineer, we will need to arrange a convenient time for them to fit it at your home address.

Provided you have sent us copies of your documents, we will be able to activate your policy once the device has been fitted and we have been through the Welcome call with you.

Is there a mileage allowance on this policy?

Yes, you are insured to drive up to 3000 miles a year.

What happens if I want to drive more than 3000 miles a year in the car?

A further 3000 miles can be purchased if needed. Eligibility to purchase additional miles and the charge for this will depend on your driving score.

Is there a cooling off period with this policy?

Yes, you can cancel your policy within the first 14 days of the start date. Provided you have returned your black box, we'll refund the part of the premium that hasn't been used with a minimum charge of one twelfth of your premium (except where an incident has occurred that may give rise to a total loss claim, in which case the full annual premium will be payable). If your black box has been fitted we'll have to charge you to remove it. Take a look at our Terms of Business document for all the details. If you change your mind and do not return your black box, we will retain one twelfth of the premium to cover the cost of the device.

How do I provide copies of my documents to you?

You can scan or photograph your driving licence, the V5C logbook and Policyholder Declaration and email them to familycar@marmalade.co.uk or post them to us at:

Am I insured to drive outside of the UK?

No, this policy will only cover you to drive in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Will I be building up a No Claim Bonus with this policy?

You certainly will. You can start building this up as soon as your policy starts. After 12 months of cover you will then have gained one year's No Claims Discount (providing you don't have any accidents or claims).

How do I receive my policy documents?

These will only be available once you have been through the Welcome call and we have activated your policy. Your policy documents will be emailed to you. You’ll also be able to access your documents online with the login details you receive.

What does the telematics device look like and where in the car is it fitted?

There are two types of black box – and both are discreet. The OBD black box is a simple to use plugin device that you plug in to the port in your car, and is suitable for up to 80% of cars. If your car is not compatible with a plug-in device you will need to have a wired device fitted. It's a little black box about the size of a deck of cards. We normally fit the box beneath your dashboard.

Can I remove the device when I am not driving?

Once your black box is fitted and your policy has started you must not remove the device. You can read more about this in our Terms of Business.

What does the telematics device measure?

It will measure and then transmit details about how you are driving the car during each of your journeys. It will measure things like speed and acceleration force, braking force and frequency, cornering, swerving, sudden manoeuvres, distance travelled, the types of routes driven, the time and date of journeys and your car's location. All of this information will then be used to give you your driver's score. Take a look at our black box explained page to find out more.

What happens if I want to change the car specified on my policy?

You need to let us know of any changes to your circumstances to make sure you policy remains valid. If you have a plug-in device, please ensure you remove it from your old vehicle and fit the device into the OBD port in your new car. If you have a wired box, you must not remove the telematics device and install it into your new car – one of our approved installers needs to do this for you. Our Terms of Business contain details of the costs relating to moving your wired box to, or installing a new device in, a new car.

What will happen if my box stops working?

Let us know at your first opportunity on 0333 323 1327 and we will send out one of our approved engineers to take a look at it for you.

What do I do if the app is not working on my phone?

If you have problems opening the app on your phone, it is worth checking and updating your phone as the app may not work on very old versions of Android. The app requires version 4.1 (Jellybean) onwards to work on Android. If the problem persists or if the app stops working, please give us a call on 0333 323 1327.

What happens if I cancel my policy after the cooling off period?

Simply return the insurance certificate to us and, as long as you haven't made a claim, we'll issue you a refund, minus the time you have been covered and with an administration fee. The charges are shown in the Terms of Business.

What happens if I disagree with the data from the telematics device?

You have the right to appeal the results within 24 hours of receiving them. Call us on 0333 323 1327.

Do you provide legal protection?

This policy does not provide legal protection (to recover uninsured losses where you are not at fault).

How much does it cost to have the telematics device installed?

The cost of the black box is included in your insurance premium. Please note that if the policy is cancelled during the cooling off period, and the black box is not returned, we will retain one twelfth of the premium to cover the cost of the device.

Most customers will receive a plug-in black box (also known as an OBD device) which is quick and easy to install yourself. If the car is not compatible with an OBD device, we will arrange for an engineer to contact you to arrange for your black box to be installed at your home address. All the details you need about this can be found in our Terms of Business document.

If I had an accident and my telematics device was damaged,
would I have to pay for another one?

If your vehicle is damaged beyond repair as a result of an insured incident, as part of your claim, your insurance policy will provide for the cost of replacing the telematics device. Otherwise please contact us on 0333 323 1327.

What do I do if my car gets stolen?

Inform the police (obtaining a crime reference number) and your insurer at your first opportunity advising them whether your car is fitted with a GPS Device (i.e. black box) that may be able to locate the vehicle’s whereabouts. Please see our make a claim section for more information.

What happens to the telematics device if the car is sold?

There are a few options for you, depending on your circumstances. For example, you will need a new device fitted in the new vehicle if you continue with your policy. Take a look at point 11 of our Terms of Business document for all the details you need.

Will I be penalised if I drive badly?

We won’t charge an extra premium if you drive unsafely every now and then. However, if you repeatedly drive at risk we may cancel your policy. Take a look at our Driver Caution process for all the full details.

What is IPT?

IPT stands for Insurance Premium Tax. This is a tax that must be added to General Insurance premiums in the UK. All insurance quotes on our website are inclusive of IPT at the current rate set by the Government.

The current standard IPT rate is 10%

What is the excess if I need to make a claim?

If there is an accident, or the car has a fire or is stolen whilst your insurance is in force, you'll need to pay a compulsory excess of £600.

Who provides the insurance cover?

Our New Driver Insurance policy on a family car is underwritten by a panel of insurers. Details of your insurer will be shown on the documentation sent to you once your policy is activated.

When can I view my journeys?

You can view your journeys as soon as your box is fitted, you have downloaded the app and we've given you your login details.
