What type of car insurance is suitable for student drivers?

Getting car insurance can be confusing, particularly for students. If you’re practising for your driving test, a new driver, or you only need occasional cover for trips home, turn to Marmalade for a policy that speaks your language.

Depending on where you’re at with your driving, our Black Box Insurance, Named Young Driver Insurance or Learner Driver Insurance could be suitable for students like you. We’ve been providing new and young drivers with insurance for over 15 years, so you can trust that we understand students’ needs.

All of our policies offer comprehensive cover so, if you have an accident, your insurance will cover you and the other parties involved - including the cost to repair or replace your vehicle - meaning you’ll only have your excess to pay.

3 steps to getting on the road

1

Find suitable insurance for you

We can help with that – just answer a few quick questions and we’ll let you know which type of student car insurance may suit you.

2

Get a quote

Once you’ve found the right option for you, it’s straightforward to get a quote. Just fill out some details about you and the car you’ll be driving.

3

Get behind the wheel

Some policies offer instant cover so you can be on the road, either in your own car or a family car, as soon as you’ve purchased your insurance.

Adding a student to a parent’s car insurance policy

Sharing the family car gives students the flexibility to get behind the wheel without having to fork out on their own car. Marmalade’s car-sharing insurance options are standalone policies that sit alongside the vehicle owner’s main insurance – so there is no need for a student to be added as a named driver and no risk to the car owner’s No Claims Discount, even if the student driver needs to claim.

Taking out car insurance as a student

Is it cheaper for students to drive a parent’s car?

Driving a parent’s car may suit you as it’ll save you having to buy your own vehicle. When it comes to getting insured, you’ll either be added to a parent’s policy as a named driver or take out a standalone policy – such as our Named Driver Insurance – so there’s no risk to the car owner’s No Claims Discount.

What might be the cheapest car insurance for students?

The cost of student car insurance will vary as it’s based on several personal factors, so it’s hard to say which option will work out cheapest. If you have limited driving experience, the cost may be higher. Comparing the options available gives you chance to try and find a policy that suits you in terms of the cover it offers and the price of your premium.

Are black box policies cheaper for student drivers?

Black Box Insurance allows students to prove they are safe drivers. It involves using a telematics tag to measure your driving. Your insurer can then use this information to provide you with a more personalised premium at renewal, based on your individual risk. This means that safe driving could potentially result in a cheaper premium.

How might students lower their car insurance premiums?

Many factors are considered when insurers price your premium – some you may be able to change to get cheaper insurance and some you can’t, such as your driving experience. If you’re looking for cheaper student car insurance, you might benefit from picking a more affordable car, driving less miles, or opting for Black Box Insurance, which lets you prove you’re a safe driver.

FAQs for student car insurance

Our student car insurance is designed to sit alongside an existing motor policy on a car owned by someone else. If you have your own car, take a look at our Black Box Insurance - an annual policy which is designed to cover you for driving your own car.

We’ll ask you for your home address and where the car is kept overnight. For your home address, you can put whichever you consider to be home. When entering where the car is kept overnight, this might be the same address or a different one – depending on where you study or whose car it is.

Our student policies are priced specifically for students, so we don’t offer an additional student discount. However, you’ll be pleased to know we do offer exclusive loyalty discounts. If you’ve previously held a Marmalade Learner Driver Insurance policy with us, we’ll give you 10% off Black Box Insurance.

The lower the insurance group of your car, the lower your premium is likely to be. Check out our handy guide to insurance groups.

While newer cars may include more safety features than an older car, they might also be more expensive to repair or replace and, as the cost of insurance is based on several factors, each insurer’s approach will vary. The best way to find out what you could be paying is to get a quote.

Yes, all our student driver policies that cover you on a provisional licence also cover you for taking your test – whether you’re covered under the same policy after you pass will depend on the type of insurance you have, so make sure you check.

Yes, you’ll be pleased to know that our student car insurance is available in the majority of UK postcodes, including Northern Ireland.

The best option will depend on the student’s individual needs. As experts in new and learner driver insurance, we can help you to learn about the different options available and try to find cover that works for you.
