Car insurance renewal can feel a bit confusing, especially if you’re learning to drive, have just passed your test, or you’re helping a young driver manage their first policy.
At Marmalade, we know your driving journey can change quickly. You might pass your test, buy your first car, change how often you drive, or decide whether black box insurance still works for you. Renewal is a good time to check your details, understand your options and make sure your cover still fits your circumstances.
What is car insurance renewal?
Car insurance renewal is the point where your current policy is due to end and you decide what happens next. You may continue your cover, update your details, or arrange a different type of insurance through Marmalade if your circumstances have changed. For example, if you’ve passed your test, changed car, moved home or changed your mileage.
How does car insurance renewal work through Marmalade?
When your renewal is approaching, we’ll attempt to contact you with your renewal information. This will usually include your renewal quote and whether your policy is set to automatically renew or whether you need to contact us to renew.
Before you decide, it’s worth checking:
- Your renewal date
- The vehicle details
- Your address and where the car is kept overnight
- Your estimated annual mileage
- Who drives the car
- Your licence status
- Any claims, accidents, convictions or endorsements
- Whether your current policy type still fits your driving stage
If your details have changed, let us know before renewal so your quote and cover are based on accurate information.
When should I renew my car insurance?
You should review your renewal as soon as you receive your renewal information. We will attempt to contact you at least 17 days before renewal. If we tell you your policy is due to automatically renew and you do not want it to, you’ll need to tell us up to 7 days before your renewal date.
What if I pass my driving test before renewal?
If you’re insured through Marmalade on a Learner Driver policy and you pass your practical driving test, your learner policy will stop immediately. This means you will not be covered by that learner policy to drive home from the test centre after passing.
You’ll need to arrange cover that reflects your new licence status as a qualified driver. Depending on your circumstances, this could mean looking at options such as Named Young Driver Insurance or Black Box Insurance.
Useful next steps:
- Tell Marmalade when you pass.
- Do not assume your learner cover continues.
- Check which policy type suits your next driving stage.
- Ask a parent or supervising driver to help review the options if you’re unsure.
Can I change car insurance at renewal?
Yes, renewal is often a good time to review whether your current cover is still right for you. You may want to change car insurance if:
- You’ve passed your test
- You’ve bought your first car
- Your annual mileage has changed
- You’ve moved address
- The car or registration has changed
- A named driver needs to be added or removed
- The way you use the car has changed
How does black box insurance work at renewal?
Black Box Insurance, also known as telematics insurance, uses driving data to help assess how the car is driven. Depending on the policy, telematics data may include things like location, time of day, acceleration, cornering, braking, speed compared with road limits, road type, distance travelled, mobile phone use while the car is moving and crash detection.
If you have telematics cover through Marmalade, renewal is a useful time to review whether that type of cover still suits you. Your renewal premium may reflect driving behaviour during the period of insurance.
