- Whether you still need cover to drive
- Whether there are any outstanding payments, fees or refunds to discuss
If you are unsure, speak to our team first so they can talk you through your options.

Will I be charged for cancelling my car insurance?
Depending on when you cancel and the type of policy you have, charges may apply. Short term cover policies may be subject to different conditions than Learner Driver, Black Box, or Student policies.
- Before your policy starts: You will get back everything you have paid, except for the service charge you paid to set up or renew your policy, as this is non-refundable.
- During the cooling-off period: You will pay for the time you were covered. The service charge you paid to set up or renew your policy is non-refundable, so you will not get it back.
- After the cooling-off period: The service charge you paid to set up or renew your policy is non-refundable, so you will not get it back. You will pay a cancellation service charge. You should refer to your insurer policy wording for their cancellation terms and charges.
- If you have made a claim: If you have paid for your policy in full you will not get a refund. If you chose to pay in instalments you will need to pay the full amount outstanding.
Does the length of my cover affect a refund?
For our Short Term Learner Driver Insurance, the length of the policy may affect whether you can get a refund after cancelling.
- If the period of insurance is 30 days or less, there is no refund due to the short-term nature of the policy.
- If the policy is 60 days or more, you have 14 days to decide if it meets your requirements, and any refund depends on time on cover and claim circumstances.
- If you do cancel during this 14 day cooling off period, you will not receive a refund on the time you were covered, and you will not get your service charge back.
- After 14 days, if the period of insurance is 6 months or less, there is no outstanding balance owed refund.
- If the period of insurance is 12 months, unused outstanding balance may be refunded, but not where a claim has been made, may need to be made, or has been made against you.
- Any service charges such as the to set up or renew your policy and the cancellation service charge are not refundable.
Because refund rules can vary by product, check your own policy documents or speak to Marmalade before making a final decision.
What happens if I pass my driving test?
If you have Learner Driver Insurance through, your learner cover stops immediately once you pass your practical driving test and are entitled to obtain a full UK car licence. You will not be covered to drive the car home from the test centre if you have passed.
That does not necessarily mean your driving journey with Marmalade has to end. If you still need cover, you could explore:
If you are moving from learning to driving independently, check what cover is suitable before getting back behind the wheel.
What if I am cancelling because my circumstances changed?
You should let us know about any changes that could affect your policy. This includes things like changing or selling your car, updating your address, changes to your annual mileage, vehicle modifications, changes to how your car is used, accidents or incidents, motoring convictions, passing your driving test, licence changes, job changes, health conditions that need to be reported to the DVLA, or changes to who is insured to drive.
If your circumstances have changed, cancelling your policy may not be your only option. Depending on your situation, it may be possible to make changes to your existing cover or move to a policy that's better suited to your needs.
Could another policy be better than cancelling?
Sometimes cancelling is the right next step. But if you still plan to drive, it may be worth checking whether you need a different type of cover instead.
For example:
- If you are still learning, learner driver insurance may still be relevant.
- If you have passed your test but don’t have your own car yet, Named Young Driver Insurance may be more suitable.
- If you are driving your own car, Black Box Insurance may be worth exploring depending on your circumstances.
- If your renewal is coming up, check our guide on renewing your insurance.
If you’re unsure, contact us for more information. A quick chat could help you understand whether cancelling, changing or moving to another type of cover is the best fit.

Yes, you can request to cancel your policy at any time. Any refund, cancellation charge or outstanding balance will depend on your policy and when the cancellation takes place.
Yes. Your cooling-off period ends 14 days after you receive your policy documents. Some short-term learner driver policies may have different refund arrangements, so it's always worth checking your policy documents for full details.
Not always. The amount you're entitled to depends on your policy, when you cancel, and whether you've made a claim. In some cases, a refund may not be available.
Depending on your policy, charges may apply after the cooling-off period has ended. You may also be charged for the period of cover you've already used before the cancellation takes effect.
If your motor insurance policy is cancelled, any associated optional products you've purchased will also be cancelled. Any refund available will depend on when the cancellation takes place and the terms of the product.
Once you've passed your practical driving test and are entitled to obtain a full UK driving licence, learner driver insurance is no longer suitable. If you still plan to drive, you'll need cover that's appropriate for a qualified driver.
If you plan to continue driving after passing your test, you'll generally need insurance that's suitable for your new status as a qualified driver. Depending on your circumstances, a young driver or black box policy may be a more suitable option.
If you've made a claim, this may affect whether you're entitled to a refund. Depending on your policy, you may also need to pay any outstanding balance owed.
