Flexible car insurance for learner drivers

Learner Driver Insurance from Marmalade, the UK’s best-known insurance provider dedicated to young drivers², helps learners to practise their driving skills in a parent’s or friend’s car in an affordable way, with cover from less than £9 per week¹. What’s more, there’s no risk to the car owner’s No Claims Discount and extra driving practice outside lessons helps provisional licence holders gain valuable experience behind the wheel.

In our annual survey of young drivers, we discovered it takes 6 months on average for a young driver to pass their test. One size doesn’t fit all, so we offer short term as well as annual learner insurance options. Choose from 30 to 180 days cover with the option to renew for 7 or 14 days. Get a quote and get behind the wheel today with instant cover!

Good to know if you’re the car owner

If you’re considering adding a learner driver to your insurance, the first instinct may be to call your insurer to add a named driver. This can be expensive, and you may incur an admin fee to add and remove the learner driver, as you’re unlikely to know how long it will take them to pass. There’s also the worry that you may lose your No Claims Discount if the learner has an accident.

Our provisional insurance allows you to cover the learner driver for a month to 6 months and top-up as necessary. There’s no setup fee, and, because it sits alongside the main insurance, there is no risk to your well-earned NCD! The best news is that you won’t need to sit on the phone for ages to your insurance company, as our car insurance for learners can be set up online in minutes. You won’t need to inform your insurer as this policy covers the learner rather than being the main insurance.

It’s simple and straightforward

1
Get a quote in minutes
All we need is a few details about the learner driver and the chosen car to give you a quote today!
2
Choose your cover
Choose one of the flexible lengths of cover, from 30 days to 180 days! If the policy comes to an end and more time to practice is needed - you can add 7 or 14 days additional cover.
3
Get behind the wheel
Once you’ve paid online – cover can start instantly, knowing that the car owner’s No Claims Discount is safe.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take driving practice at the moment?

In England, driving lessons with an instructor can now re-commence subject to new guidelines. Driving tests will also be re-starting later this month. Learners can also take private practice, provided their supervising driver lives in the same household, has held a full UK driving licence for 3 years and is aged over 25.

If you or anyone in your household has had symptoms, you should self-isolate, so in these circumstances, you should not drive.

Please read the Government websitefor the latest information . For drivers in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, the rules may differ, so please check the gov.scot, gov.wales or indirect.gov.uk websites for more detailed guidance.

What is the policy excess?

You will need to pay the first £250 towards the claim if there is a fire, the car is stolen or you have an accident whilst you're driving.

Who can supervise a learner and how old must they be?

Any driver who is over 25, who currently holds a current valid full UK driving licence, and has done for at least three years, can supervise you. It doesn't even need to be the person who owns the car. Of course, you'll need the permission of whoever owns the car - we're sure you knew that anyway!

Will I be covered to take my driving test with learner insurance?

Yes. You will need to take your insurance policy documents with you and ensure the car meets certain requirements set by the government. We’ve summarised the main points here but we advise you to read the full requirement on the government website.
- It must be taxed
- The car must be roadworthy (with a current MOT for cars over 3 years old)
There can’t be any warning lights showing
There can’t be any tyre damage or space saver tyre fitted
You must fit L plates to the front and rear of the car and an extra interior rear-view mirror for the examiner.

What is learner driver insurance?

Marmalade’s Learner Driver Insurance allows provisional licence holders to get extra driving practice in a friend or family member’s car. This comprehensive policy sits separate to the car owner’s policy and covers the learner driver while they are behind the wheel, without affecting the car owner’s No Claims Bonus. As the name suggests, cover ends once the learner passes their test – as they’re no longer a learner driver!

Can a learner be insured on their own car?

Yes – but not with this policy. This is a short-term policy designed to sit alongside an existing motor policy of a car owned by someone else. Our Black Box Insurance is designed to cover a young driver in their own car before and after they pass!

Are learner drivers covered to drive on the motorway?

We’re afraid not. Our learner insurance will not cover a learner to drive on a motorway during their private practice. By law, Learner drivers are only allowed to drive on the motorway with a qualified driving instructor with dual controls, provided the driving instructor is confident that the learner is experienced enough and close to passing their driving test.

Can more than one learner driver be insured on the same car?

The car insurance only covers the learner driver named on the policy. However, if there is more than one learner driver to insure each driver can have their own policy and practise in the same car.
