Increase your chance of passing with provisional insurance

The DVSA recommends learner drivers get as much driving practice as possible alongside lessons. Our short-term car insurance for learner drivers makes it easy and affordable to practice in a family or friend's car. How’s that you ask?

  • With cover from £1.23 per day¹, it’s often more cost effective than adding a provisional driver to existing insurance
  • Marmalade learner insurance customers are 23% more likely to pass first time!³
  • Temporary options from 30 days to 6 months means you just pay for the cover you need

What’s more, insuring a learner driver on a parent’s car or friend’s car gives peace of mind to the car owner as well as the learner:

  • Cover is comprehensive with a low excess of £250
  • There’s no risk to the car owner’s No Claims Bonus
  • This provisional car insurance covers them for the driving test

Forget sitting on the phone to your insurer, it takes minutes to get a quote and arrange cover get on the road straight away.

Good to know if you’re the car owner

If you’re considering adding a learner driver to your insurance, the first instinct may be to call your insurer to add a named driver. This can be expensive, and you may incur an admin fee to add and remove the learner driver, as you’re unlikely to know how long it will take them to pass. There’s also the worry that you may lose your No Claims Discount if the learner has an accident.
Our provisional insurance allows you to cover the learner driver for a month to 6 months and top-up as necessary. There’s no setup fee, and, because it sits alongside the main insurance, there is no risk to your well-earned NCD! The best news is that you won’t need to sit on the phone for ages to your insurance company, as our car insurance for learners can be set up online in minutes. You won’t need to inform your insurer as this policy covers the learner rather than being the main insurance.

Common questions about learner insurance

Is my cover affected during lockdown?

Your cover is not affected during this time. All drivers are covered for the purposes specified on their policy - this means that should you make a non-essential journey your cover will still be in force. There had been suggestion in the press that some car insurance policies will be invalid if you drive for a non-essential purpose. This is not the case. However, we do stress that you should follow government guidelines, as they are in place for good reason and for your own safety and well-being.

Who can supervise a learner and how old must they be?

Any driver who is over 25, who currently holds a current valid full UK driving licence, and has done for at least three years, can supervise you. It doesn't even need to be the person who owns the car. Of course, you'll need the permission of whoever owns the car - we're sure you knew that anyway! Read our guide to insuring a learner driver for the ins and outs of how learner insurance works!

What is the policy excess?

You will need to pay the first £250 towards the claim if there is a fire, the car is stolen or you have an accident whilst you're driving.

Can more than one learner driver be insured on the same car?

This learner driver car insurance only covers the learner driver named on the policy. However, if there is more than one learner driver to insure each driver can have their own policy and practise in the same car.

What is learner driver insurance?

Marmalade’s learner insurance allows provisional licence holders to get extra driving practice in a friend or family member’s car (read our guide to make sure you get the most out of private practice). This comprehensive policy sits separate to the car owner’s policy and covers the learner driver while they are behind the wheel, without affecting the car owner’s No Claims Bonus. As the name suggests, cover ends once the learner passes their test – as they’re no longer a learner driver!

Will I be covered to take my driving test with learner insurance?

Yes. You will need to take your insurance policy documents with you and ensure the car meets certain requirements set by the government. We’ve summarised the main points here but we advise you to read the full requirement on the government website.
- It must be taxed
- The car must be roadworthy (with a current MOT for cars over 3 years old)
There can’t be any warning lights showing
There can’t be any tyre damage or space saver tyre fitted
You must fit L plates to the front and rear of the car and an extra interior rear-view mirror for the examiner.

Can a learner be insured on their own car?

Yes – but not with this policy. This is a short-term policy designed to sit alongside an existing motor policy of a car owned by someone else. Our Black Box Insurance is designed to cover a young driver in their own car before and after they pass! If you're not quite decided yet what type of insurance you need, we've a handy guide to help you compare insurance options for learner drivers.
