What is Short Term Learner Insurance?
Whether you're preparing for your driving test, taking an intensive course or simply looking to get some extra practice in, 30 day car insurance through Marmalade gives you a 30 days of comprehensive cover in a parent’s, partner’s or friend’s car.
What is 30 day learner driver insurance?
It's the shortest option in our short-term learner range, which also comes in 60, 90, 120, 180 and 240-day blocks. You pay for one month up front, get behind the wheel, and only pay for the time you actually need.
It’s also a separate policy from the car’s owner. This short term cover will be in your own name, so if something goes wrong while you're driving, any claim goes through your policy and not theirs, so their premium and No Claims Discount are protected.
Who's 1 month temporary car insurance for?
A month tends to suit learners who already know roughly what they need. It could be a good fit if you're:
- On an intensive course: You've booked a week or two of back-to-back lessons and want private practice around them.
- Weeks away from your test: 30 days takes you neatly up to (and through) test day.
- Making the most of a holiday: A school break, uni holiday, or a supervising driver's time off slots nicely into a month.
- Bridging a gap: Your last policy has run out and you need a little more time before your test.
Need a bit more time? A 60-day or 90-day policy could give you a bit more breathing room if you're earlier in the journey.

Am I eligible?
There are a few simple requirements to check before you get started:
- You need a UK provisional licence and to be aged 17-34.
- Your supervisor needs to be 25 or over with a full UK licence held for at least three years. If they only drive automatics, they can't supervise you in a manual.
- Before taking out cover, we'll need to make sure the vehicle meets our learner driver insurance criteria. Eligibility is based on factors such as the car's age, value and insurance group.
You don't need to own the car, we know that most learners practise in a parent's, sibling's, partner's, or friend's motor. But the car you practice in must be insured under its own policy.
A note for parents: we know lending the keys can feel like a big deal. Because this is a separate policy, your annual insurance and No Claims Discount stay exactly as they are, even if something happens during a lesson.
What happens when test day comes around?
Your Marmalade cover is designed for the learner stage, so it ends the moment you pass your practical test. While it means they'll be no wasted premium after test day, there are two things to keep in mind:
- If you're taking your test in the insured car, sort a lift home from the test centre. You can't legally drive back on a learner policy once you've passed.
- If you fail your test or you decide you'd like a bit more practice, you can easily pick up a fresh short-term policy to keep going.
When you do pass, you don't have to move on from Marmalade. Our Named Young Driver and Black Box policies could help you get on the road in your own (or a parent's) car next.
