What is 240-day car insurance?

For learners who want the maximum amount of time to build experience behind the wheel, 240 day car insurance is Marmalade's longest temporary cover option. This longer stretch of times allows for cover across lessons, private practice and the run-up to your test, all in one policy. And because it works as a separate cover to the car owner's own insurance, their No Claims Discount isn't affected while you're covered to practise.

240 day learner driver insurance is the longest short-term policy Marmalade offers. It gives provisional licence holders 240 days of comprehensive cover to practise in someone else’s car, whether that’s a parent, friend, sibling, or someone else. Have your own car? Take a look at Black Box Insurance.

Sitting at the top of our short-term range, above 30, 60, 90, 120 and 180 day policies, it's built for learners who want a single, long-form policy rather than a series of shorter ones.

Because it runs as its own policy alongside the car owner's annual cover, any claim during your practice sessions is handled through Marmalade rather than through their insurance. Their No Claims Discount stays exactly where it is.

Who is 240 day learner cover for?

The longest option in the hub is designed for learners who want maximum flexibility from day one. It could be a good fit if you're:

  • Starting from the very beginning: If you've just received your provisional, 240 days could carry you all the way from your first tentative drive to full confidence.
  • Learning around a full academic year or long-term schedule: A longer policy can match the rhythm of school, university or shift-based work.
  • Wanting one policy for the whole journey: Rather than renewing shorter policies as you go, this option gives you cover in place from start to finish.

Am I eligible?

To take out 240 day learner driver insurance, we'll need a few things to be in place:

  • Learner driver insurance is available to provisional licence holders aged 17–34.
  • You'll also need a qualifying supervising driver, aged 25 or over with a full UK licence held for at least three years.
  • To be eligible for cover, the vehicle must meet our learner driver requirements. This includes checks around the car's age, value and insurance group, which you'll be guided through during the quote process.

Advice to parents of young learner drivers

Agreeing to a long-term learner policy is a meaningful decision, so here's what's worth knowing before your child gets started:

  • Marmalade's policy runs alongside your own insurance without changing or affecting it in any way.
  • Your No Claims Discount stays intact/ Any claim during a practice session goes through the learner policy, not yours.
  • The cover ends the moment your child passes their practical test, so there's nothing to cancel or reshuffle on test day.
  • Practice happens on your terms. As the supervising driver you're in charge of when your child drives, where they go and how long each session lasts.

For families with more than one learner, or where a test date is likely to be some way off, 240 days can offer the kind of long-term stability that makes learning easier for everyone involved.

What happens as your test approaches?

If your test date falls within your 240 day policy, you'll be covered for it; right up to the moment you pass. Once you do pass, however, you won’t be covered, so make sure you have a lift home from your test!

After that, consider our Named Young Driver and Black Box to keep your cover with Marmalade.

If, for any reason, you'd like more time beyond your 240 days, you can take out another short-term policy in any of our duration options and continue practising without interruption.
