What is 120-day car insurance?

When learning to drive, having a longer stretch of cover can take some of the pressure off. 120 day car insurance through Marmalade gives you roughly four months of comprehensive cover to get some real practice in.

It's designed to give you space to develop your skills at a comfortable pace, with the reassurance that appropriate insurance is in place while you're learning. And because the policy sits alongside the car owner's existing insurance, their No Claims Discount isn't affected while you're covered to drive.

120 day learner driver insurance is a longer short-term option with a fixed 120 days of comprehensive cover for provisional licence holders. That's roughly four months, though the exact length may vary slightly depending on the calendar months involved. It sits in the middle of Marmalade's short-term range, giving you more time than a 30, 60 or 90 day policy without committing to a 180 or 240 day one.

The cover works as its own standalone policy, running in parallel with the car owner's annual insurance. Any claim during your practice sessions is handled through Marmalade rather than through their cover, so their No Claims Discount stays exactly where it is.

Who is 4 month car insurance for?

With 120 days equalling roughly four months, this longer-term window could suit learners who want a proper stretch of time to make real progress. It may be a good fit if you're:

  • Committing to learning consistently: 120 days typically gives you time to develop a steady rhythm, so you can turn early lessons into confident, familiar drives.
  • Restarting after a pause: If lessons have been on hold and you're picking things back up, 120 days provides a proper reset rather than a rushed catch-up.
  • Learning without watching the calendar: A longer policy gives you room to focus on quality of practice rather than trying to fit everything into a tight window.

Am I eligible?

To take out 120 day learner driver insurance, a few requirements need to be met:

  • The learner must hold a UK provisional licence and be aged 17–34.
  • The supervising driver needs to be aged 25 or over and hold a full UK licence for at least three years. Automatic-only licence holders can't supervise practice in a manual car.
  • The car will need to meet our learner driver insurance criteria, including limits around vehicle age, value and insurance group. You'll be able to confirm eligibility when you get a quote..

A note for parents

120 days is a meaningful stretch of time, so it's worth knowing exactly how the cover works before saying yes to the car keys:

  • Marmalade sits as a separate policy alongside your annual insurance, it doesn't change or replace your own cover in any way.
  • Your No Claims Discount is protected from anything that happens during your child's practice sessions.
  • The learner policy ends automatically once your child passes their practical test, with no cancellation admin needed.

For many learners and their families, a longer policy like 120 days can allow for calmer, more spaced-out sessions, giving both of you time to build confidence together.

What happens as your test approaches?

Giving you about four months to practice, a 120-day policy can take some of the stress out of test preparation, giving you time to build up naturally rather than cram. If your test date falls within your 120 days, your policy will cover you to take it.

If you're not quite ready by the end of your 120 days, that's OK. You can take out another short-term policy in any of Marmalade's duration options and continue practising without a gap in your learning.

Once you pass, learner cover no longer applies. Our Named Young Driver and Black Box options could help you take that next step onto the road, either in your own car or a family vehicle.
