What is Learner Driver Insurance?
Marmalade’s Learner Driver Insurance helps provisional licence holders to get those all-important extra hours of driving practice in a friend or family member’s car. This comprehensive policy sits alongside the car owner’s policy and covers the provisional licence holder while they are behind the wheel, and during the driving test, if needed. As the name suggests, cover ends once the learner passes their test – as they’re no longer a learner driver!
In our annual survey of young drivers, we discovered it takes 6 months on average for a young driver to pass their test. We know one size doesn’t fit all, so we offer flexible options from 30 days to 6 months' cover to suit everyone.

What is the policy excess?
You will need to pay the first £250 towards the claim if there is a fire, the car is stolen or you have an
accident whilst you're driving.
Can a learner be insured on their own car?
Yes – but not with this policy. This is a short-term policy designed to sit alongside an existing motor policy of a car owned by someone else. Our Black Box Insurance is designed to cover a young driver in their own car before and after they pass!
Who can supervise a learner and how old must they be?
Any driver who is over 25, who currently holds a current valid full UK driving licence, and has done
for at least three years, can supervise you. It doesn't even need to be the person who owns the car.
Of course, you'll need the permission of whoever owns the car - we're sure you knew that anyway!
Are learner drivers covered to drive on the motorway?
We’re afraid not. Our learner insurance will not cover a learner to drive on a motorway during their
private practice. By law, Learner drivers are only allowed to drive on the motorway with a qualified
driving instructor with dual controls, provided the driving instructor is confident that the learner is
experienced enough and close to passing their driving test.
