Driving test Young driver stories 5 min read

We’ve decided to put two of Marmalade’s employees to the test! Alex never had to take her theory test because she passed her test before it was introduced. Chloe is still learning to drive, and hasn’t tackled the theory test yet!

We wanted to know whether it’s the experience of driving, or hitting the textbook, that is best at helping you to pass?

Before the test

Have you revised?

Chloe – Yes. I know I need to get my theory test done soon, so I have been practising, just maybe not as much as I should have. I think there is still a lot I need to learn.

Alex – No, but I am beginning to wonder whether I should have done, as I have no idea how the hazard perception test actually works :-/

Are you expecting to pass?

Chloe – Honestly, I’m not sure. I know I have learnt a lot in my driving lessons and I’ve definitely picked some stuff up through the practice on DVDs and apps etc, but you just never know!

Alex – As I’m a regular road user – I have to say yes really! I hope so.

After the test:

How did you find the theory test?

Chloe – It went really well. There were a couple of questions where I didn’t have a clue what they meant, never mind what the answer was! However, a lot of the questions seemed to be things I did already know (and a lot of common sense) so there were only a few that stumped me.

Alex – The test was OK – it didn’t take as long as I thought and I have to say that I found some of the answers offered were quite amusing, which I think helped relax me during the course of the test. For the most part, I went with what was the most “common sense” answer. I can’t remember when I last looked at the Highway Code, and I didn’t revise.

The ones I failed on were ones that – had I studied – I probably would have known. Things like the order of the traffic lights – which I see every day, and abide by the rules, but I couldn’t remember what occasions red and amber showed together!

Did you pass?

Chloe – YES! It looks like the practice I have done has paid off. I’ll definitely be putting in some more hours’ revision before the real thing. I scored 45/50 on the theory test; I think I’ve shocked myself in how much I already know…

Alex – YES! My pass mark was 46/50 for the theory test. Not too bad, ay?

How did you find the hazard perception?

Chloe – The hazard perception actually went a lot better than I thought it would. I managed to see the majority of the hazards within a good time! In our practice, we only did 3 hazard perception clips as opposed to the 14 you would in the real test, so whilst it gave me a clue of what it will be like – I’m sure it’s nothing on the real thing.

Alex – This is one I should have studied for, as I have never even seen what the hazard perception test looks like. It goes to show that I am probably a bit too complacent, as I didn’t really have a clue what I was doing.

Did you pass?

Chloe – YES! But only just! I scored 9/15 on the hazard perception. So whilst I did pass… it was very close!

Alex – NO! I scored 8/15… so close! It was a bit of a wake-up call as I feel like in real life, I am very aware of potential hazards. I’d like to blame the quality of the vid, but as Chloe passed, I’m not sure I can use that as an excuse. Hopefully, with a bit of practice, I would have passed.

And there we have it, two completely different drivers taking the theory test. Although Chloe pipped Alex to the post on the hazard perception test, it was pretty even throughout. The theory test has to be taken before your practical test, so although Alex learned everything she needed whilst out on the road, Chloe has brushed up on revising and passed!

We have lots of great theory test tips over on our website. If you’ve got your test coming up – it may be worth giving them a once over so you know you’ll pass with flying colours!
