Recent research has highlighted the importance that a car’s age plays in the safety of young drivers but buying a brand new car for drivers as young as 17 can now actually be cheaper than buying an old banger, thanks to Marmalade’s Fuel &Go.
The scheme offers drivers between the ages of 17 and 25 a brand new car for as little as £175 per month and free insurance for the first year. Launched in 2014, Marmalade’s Fuel&Go has seen a month on month increase with record sales in December, reflecting the increasing demand for safe cars for young drivers at an affordable price.
A new study has revealed that more than 30 per cent of teens killed in road accidents across the US were driving cars that were 11 years old or more. Of the 2,420 fatal accidents looked into, 31 per cent of young drivers were in cars 11-15 years old. *
In the past decade there has been a huge advance in the safety of car manufacturing and when it comes to young drivers, who are less experienced and statistically more likely to be in an accident, this additional protection can save lives. In the UK, one in five accidents involves a young driver but across Marmalade’s customer base of drivers aged between 17 and 25, this drops to one in 20. The success relies on a combination of factors including: only insuring cars less than nine years old with a maximum engine size of 1.4. Its telematics-based insurance policies flag any risky driving and result in a call to the driver within 24 hours to discuss ways of avoiding potentially dangerous driving situations in the future.
Crispin Moger, CEO at Marmalade, said: “The Association of British Insurers commissioned research last year which found that the fear of their children being injured in a serious car crash tops the list of parents’ concerns. As a parent myself I share these worries not only for my daughter but others on the road. We want to do all we can to improve safety for all young drivers and experience plays a critical part in this, particularly in the first 12 months after passing a test. This means helping people to drive a vehicle that offers the key safety features only available in newer cars. We have worked hard to create a package making a new car an affordable option and along with our advanced telematics system have created a customer safety record of which we are very proud.”
