2017 has brought some huge changes for young people; from the new GCSEs to the new driving test. We want to know how young people feel about all these changes taking place at once. Are you taking it in your stride that all these changes are happening, or are you starting to feel like a bit of a guinea pig?
It is not surprising that changing the grading system for GCSEs – from A*-U, to 9-1 – caused confusion, and not just for the teenagers taking the test but also teachers and parents.
The GCSEs were designed to be more challenging (as if you didn’t have enough to deal with), and covering more content that they have in previous years, to help prepare students for work in further education. The first changes were in English literature, English language and maths and took place in summer 2017, but we’re sure you already know this!
New Driving Test
Along with the change of GCSEs this year, driving tests are also changing from December, and nearly 70% of you have told us that you don’t feel completely ready for the changes. Even though more people may experience the new driving test over the GCSEs, it is those 17-year-olds that are most affected and are having all of these changes (quite substantial life changes) thrown at them at once.
The changes include:
- New Show Me/Tell Me questions
- Changes to the manoeuvres:
- An extended independent driving section, including following a sat nav (for 4 out of 5 drivers)
Road collisions are the biggest killer of young drivers, so these changes are coming into place to make sure that people have better training, to hopefully reduce the number of deaths on the road each year.
When it comes to practicing your driving skills, getting short term learner driver insurance can go a long way towards helping you reach your driving goals. So ask your parents if they’re happy for you to get your own insurance on their car for some extra practic; it won’t even affect their No Claims Discount!
