It official! Learner drivers will be allowed to take on the motorway in their driving lessons, from June this year. This is a huge shakeup to lessons, and is a step towards helping newly qualified drivers tackle the fears of the motorway! Allowing learners onto the motorway has been in discussion for some time, and we now know it will happen from 4th June 2018.

How will the change work?

All motorway driving lessons will be voluntary – so it won’t be making its way into the driving test. If you want a lesson on the motorway, discuss this with your driving instructor, as they will have the final decision as to when they feel you are competent enough to tackle the motorway.

What will you need?

An Approved Driving Instructor by your side

They will ensure you are in a safe, controlled environment when you head out onto the motorway. It can be daunting (as our ambassador Jim knows all too well) – so you will need that support for when you take the first drive. Trainee driving instructors, friends or parents will not be able to accompany you on to motorway whilst you’re learning.

Dual controls

If you want to head out onto the motorway for a driving lesson, the car you are driving MUST have dual controls. Without these, your instructor will not have any control over the car. They know you can do it because they wouldn’t take you out there if they didn’t think you were capable, but to be on the safe side – the dual controls are a must.

What are these changes for?

These changes are to help learners on their road to that magic pass. In a survey, last year of over 1,800 young and learner drivers, 63% of those who have passed their test feel they could have been better prepared to tackle the motorway when they were learning.

Our ambassador Jim took his first step onto the motorway last year. He had passed, but avoided the motorway! We paired him up with Lew Whittaker (ADI) to take him out onto the motorway!

“Overall I would really rate having a motorway lesson if you have never had one before! It definitely put me at ease and cleared a lot of things up for me!” – Jim

From June, all learners will get the same opportunity as Jim, but they don’t have to wait until they’ve passed – they can tackle this in their driving lessons.

Why should I take a motorway lesson while learning?

It’s entirely up to you, but we believe that getting broader driving experience, before taking your test and going solo on the road, is really beneficial. Even though it won’t be included the test – motorway driving is great to open your eyes to all the things roads and driving have to offer.

Training on how to enter and exit the motorway is also key. You can tackle slip-roads on your lessons, but this is on a much bigger scale so it’s great to know what to do before you try it yourself.

You also get to put your theory test into practice. We answer lots of questions on motorway driving, but now we can see what it is really like to drive on them.
