As we move into a new year, there are some things definitely worth keeping an eye out for! Whether it’s new car models, changes within the insurance industry, or simply a new gadget that could change your life and the way you drive forever! We’ve put together a little list of what you can expect to see in 2017 – some things are to be celebrated, others not so much… but either way it’s good for young drivers to stay in the loop and keep familiarised with what‘s going on in the world of motoring

New Wheels!

The Fiesta is definitely one the most popular cars among young drivers and the current model was one of the best-selling cars in 2016. The 2017 model doesn’t look too dissimilar from the previous one, but it has some new improved features such as the “swipe and pinch” LCD touch screen, more spacious dashboard, slicker looking grille as well as headlights! Available in 1.1L engine or standard 1.0L ecoboost. Entry level price expected to start at around £14,000.

Then we have the Polo which is set to be VW’s best model do date! According to various sources it’s set to have a larger and lighter frame, touch screen display, driver assist functions including cruise control and parking assist with a reversing camera. Manual and automatic gearbox options available with twin-exhaust systems and an all-new 1.5L diesel option! Apparently it’s only going to be offered in 5 door though… and we have no idea what it even looks like yet!

Insurance Premium Tax and road tax due to go up….again

A minor inconvenience and expense we all have to look forward to is that IPT (Insurance Premium Tax) set to go up yet again. Phillip Hammond, the Chancellor, confirmed in his Autumn Statement back in November 2016 that the rate of IPT will increase from the current 10% to 12% in June 2017. Despite the fact that IPT went up twice last year, drivers will now be expected to fork out, on average, an extra £10 a year for their insurance.

Not only that, your road tax may be on the up too! As of 1st April 2017 Chancellor George Osbourne has put in place a new rate for road tax meaning all motorists with cars built after 2001 that come into a certain Co2 emission bracket will have to pay a set rate of £140 a year. Drivers of cars with a value of more than £40,000 will have to pay a £310 supplement. It will only be electric cars that’ll be exempt from tax all together. There will be a few holes burned into our pockets this year no doubt!

If you are unsure of what you will be looking to pay on your car – check out the official website.

Tougher penalties for using a mobile phone behind the wheel

mobile phones

The current penalty for getting caught using a mobile phone behind the wheels stands as 3 points on your licence and a £100 fine. As of this year the government are putting plans in place to crack down on mobile phone offences and will be enforcing a law which means anyone caught using a mobile device behind the wheel, when it is not permitted to do so, will automatically receive 6 points on their licence and a £300 fine according to New drivers face having their licence completely revoked on the first offence and drivers who are caught twice and acquire 12 points, will face a £1000 fine along with a 6 month ban.

The new laws stem from the lack of prosecutions given to offenders caught using their mobiles and the amount of cases in the last few years which have led to the deaths of cyclists, pedestrians and other road users and the devastating effect on the families. Just like drink driving, using a mobile device is equally as dangerous and it’s about time motorists, young and old, start taking it more seriously. We’re all for the new laws! No text message or Facebook notification is worth risking your own life or anyone else’s.

So those are some of the main things to keep your eyes out for in 2017! As we explained not all of them are something to be cheerful about, but as we push forward for a more eco-friendly, safe and fair world of motoring – let’s hope these hard times we’re facing now will lead to better days in the future!
