A new study by Road Safety Analysis (RSA) and Michelin says young rural drivers are nearly twice as likely to be involved in an accident than their younger urban counterparts.

Our headquarters are based in Peterborough in Cambridgeshire – on the edge of the Fenlands – so this is not entirely a surprise.

The Fenlands, is the third worst young driver accident blackspot in the entire UK with five out of the six districts in Cambridgeshire having a rate worse than the national average, according to the National Federation of Young Farmers.

I used to live in a very rural setting and having driven down the country roads many times I know what they’re like, and I know how easy it is for an accident to happen.

I still remember about 15 to 16 years ago, when I got through my test and within the first few hours of driving without a Learner Driver , I went round a bend on a country road too fast and nearly came off the road because no-one had actually taught me how to go round a bend, at the right speed and exactly when to brake in this situation. It was a good lesson for me at the time but it could have ended a lot worse.

Country roads have many additional hazards, like dykes, uneven and narrow roads, sharp bends and poor lighting or totally unlit routes after dark.

The National Federation of Young Farmers (NFYF) launched its own safety campaign earlier this year to highlight these issues

Marmalade applauds the NFYF campaign. We are also working closely with local instructors across the Fenlands to encourage use of telematics (the black box). Technology comes into its own on country roads where it helps to create controls and limitations for young drivers.

It alters the mindset of young drivers before they get in the car, they know that they’re being monitored by the box and they’re happy to be monitored in this context. It is one of a string of ideas and solutions which could help to make rural roads safer and we’ll be continuing conversations with NFYF, instructors and other road safety organisations to roll it out. Young drivers could to ease the financial burden through young drivers in event of a car accident.
