You may have heard about the new changes to road tax coming into effect from 1 April 2017. If you haven’t – here’s a bit of a lowdown on the new legislation.

Just to re-assure you, if you already own a car – the new changes won’t affect you. They apply to cars registered after 1st April 2017!

Fortunately it has nothing to do with your age, it’s all down to co2 emissions, tax band and the type of vehicle you drive. For cars registered from the 1st April 2017:

  • All normal cars that run on petrol and diesel will now pay a flat rate of £140.
  • Low emission vehicles I.e. Hybrid, LPG and Bi-Ethanol cars will pay a tax rate of £130.
  • Zero emissions vehicles will continue to be exempt from paying tax all together.
  • Cars with a value of over £40,000 will pay a £310 supplement.

For cars built before this time, (between 1st March 2001-1st March 2017) they will continue to pay the standard fixed rate of the current tax band they come under and what’s stated on the V5.

If you are unsure of what your existing tax band is, you can visit the official Gov website and take a look at their vehicle tax rate table for more information.

If you are looking at purchasing a new car in the next few weeks, we highly suggest you look at getting it before the 1st April if want to avoid this new tax hike! We offer a range of fantastic new cars with free insurance and free tax for the first year. So get in there whilst you can folks!
