Learning to drive Parent advice Young driver stories 3 min read

In February this year, Ella will be turning 17 and getting behind the wheel in driving lessons as she begins her journey to earn her full driving licence. Her dad and Marmalade CEO Crispin, has been chatting with us on how he feels about Ella hitting the roads!

How do you feel about Ella getting behind the wheel?

I’m very excited for Ella to start driving, mainly because I remember how excited I was when I was a learner. It’s a super exciting time for any young person to gain the freedom of the road, and I can’t wait for Ella to experience it too. With that being said, as any dad would be, I’m absolutely petrified that my little girl will be behind the wheel on public roads. We’ve taken Ella on track days and trips on private roads, so it isn’t her ability that worries me, but other drivers. In my position here at Marmalade, I have seen plenty of stats, figures and footage etc, on the accidents young people can be involved in when they’re behind the wheel. When I started to drive, I was completely oblivious to the dangers that really come with being on the road, but now that I know – it makes it all the more nerve-wracking that Ella will be driving.

Have you prepared for her driving lessons?

Absolutely – Ella can’t wait to learn to drive, and has sent off for her provisional driving licence so it’s here in time for her 17th birthday. As a family – myself, my wife, and Ella have been looking at driving instructors in the area as well as getting recommendations from friends and family so we hopefully make the best choice for Ella straight away.

Once Ella has had a few lessons with an instructor, we’ll be sure to get in some private practice with either me or my wife supervising her. We’re unsure as of yet as to whether we’ll get Learner Driver Insurance on my wife’s car for Ella to practice in, or if Ella will get a small car of her own, and get New Driver Insurance. I suppose this will be something we’ll look into in a few months’ time!

How do you think you’ll feel once Ella has passed?

Looking further down the line, once Ella has passed – I’ll be looking into advanced driving courses that she can go on. Not just a Pass Plus, but one where she can see what the car is really capable of doing, and how to control the situation when it goes wrong. Many young drivers that are involved in accidents are so because they’re simply unaware and uneducated on what to do in the event of an accident, or where they lose control of the car. Of course driving lessons teach you to pass your test, but I feel like these types of courses will help to keep her safe and prepared on the road once she has passed, and so she will know what to do should she ever find herself in a situation where she doesn’t have control of the car anymore.

We’re all very excited for Ella to start her driving journey, and wish her all the luck in the world!

'As the CEO of Marmalade, and having spent 20 years working in the motor and insurance industry, I feel strongly about helping young drivers to get on the road in a safer, fairer and simpler way. Outside work I'd describe myself as a hard rock loving adventure sports fan, who loves to travel.'  See more posts by Crispin
