It is crucial that young drivers are aware of the new drink drive limit in Scotland as of 5th December 2014.

The new drink drive limit in Scotland has been lowered to 50mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood, nearly half of the current 80mg limit. The limit elsewhere in the UK will remain at 80mg which is the joint highest limit in Europe.

So how much alcohol can you drink before driving? This new drink driving limit could mean that motorists are prosecuted after a single glass of wine or pint of beer.

Scotland’s legal drink drive limit is now in line with much of Europe, including France and Germany. Brake, the road safety charity sponsored by Marmalade would like an even tougher stance on drinking and driving, calling for a limit of just 20mg to be brought in. Brake has said that 20mg is as close to an absolute ban as you can get without accidentally penalising those with trace elements of alcohol in their bloodstream.

Did you know: Even Coca-Cola and Pepsi

have a tiny amount of alcohol in them!

On average it takes one hour for a healthy liver to process one unit of alcohol so it could take up to 12 hours to be safe to drive after drinking a bottle of wine. (A handy fact to remember over the Christmas period!) However, it does depend on your body mass, gender and how much food you have eaten that day.

Even if you think you feel fine after drinking heavily there is still a high possibility that you will be above the legal limit the following morning – wherever you are in the UK.

What can be done to sober up quickly?

Contrary to common myths, drinking coffee or having a cold shower may make you feel more awake but it will not remove alcohol from your blood stream.

Alcohol travels throughout the human body, via the liver, and is lost through urine and sweat. Therefore time is the only cure.

Drinking plenty of water will help replenish some

of the water lost in the brain and ease a

lot of the aches and pains too!

Whilst everyone reacts differently to alcohol we suggest that you don’t get behind the wheel of the car if any alcohol has been consumed – even if it’s “just one!”

We want to know how many drivers are aware of this new drink drive limit. Do young drivers know how much they can legally drink before getting behind the wheel?

Marmalade Brand Ambassador, Paige Hayman explains the serious social consequences of drink driving

drink drive

“One of my friend’s brothers was caught for drink driving two years ago. He drove what would have been a two minute journey. He ended up crashing the car into a railing and drove off. The police were informed. He then left the car and run a few streets down when the police arrived. As a result of this he was kept in a cell for a night. He also got a criminal record for resisting arrest as well as driving under the influence. Therefore he has struggled to get employers to look past the fact he has two criminal records he has to declare his records for the next 5 years. He also got a fine and a year driving ban. This consequently has put his new insurance up massively and he has struggled to get driving again. Through seeing this happen I have realised how harsh the consequences are of drink driving and how long they can have an effect on your life.”
