Driving in different seasons requires different measures.
1 Driving with ice on your windscreen
We’re all familiar with the ice on our windscreens, it shows up uninvited every morning in the colder months! In order to drive safely with full visibility, Rule 229 of the Highway Code states that you MUST be able to see and therefore clear your windscreen of all ice and snow.
2 Over-the-top Santa costumes
That’s not to say that you can’t have the best Santa costume at the party, just make sure you are able to safely drive as you normally would. Rule 97 in the Highway Code states that “clothing and footwear do not prevent you from using the controls in the correct manner”, meaning the Santa boots & jacket might have to wait until the party to be worn!
3 Not having your fog lights on
If you live somewhere where misty and foggy mornings are a common occurrence, you’re probably familiar with this one. It’s stated in the Highway Code that you you must have your headlights on when your visibility is seriously reduced, so add that to the winter driving checklist!
4 Leaving frost on your registration plate
Don’t forget to check your reg plate when defrosting and cleaning your car in the snowy months! You could be fined £1,000 for not having a visible registration plate, The Highway Code states “lights, indicators and number plates must be kept clean and clear”.
5 Getting carried away with the festive spirit
‘Tis the season of work parties, family reunions, and friendly get-togethers! Socialising during this time often goes hand in hand with a drink after work, which is great for making fun memories but dangerous if you’re driving. Always abide by the UK’s drink-drive limit to ensure you are keeping yourself and fellow drivers safe, might be good to try out some mocktail recipes!
