Fiat's fashionista-friendly 500 inherits cool retro looks from its mid-century ancestor and, like the original 500, this stylish supermini stands out from the crowd. Fiat have nailed the vintage look with styling that's somewhere between chic and cheeky, but this little beauty isn't a case of style over substance, the 500 is also cheap to run and offers a fun, spritely driving experience.

If you're after a car that delivers bags of style on a budget then look no further than the 500. While most of its competitors complement cost-cutting performance with middle of the road looks the Fiat is both fashionable and thrifty. It's considerably cheaper to buy that retro rivals like the Mini and Beetle and most models keep running costs down thanks to excellent fuel economy and low CO2 emissions.
The compact, nippy 500 is a great city car that's small and agile enough to navigate dense traffic and nestle into the smallest of parking spaces. Nonetheless the cabin is well designed and makes the most of its limited proportions, allowing four adults to travel in relative comfort. Great news if you fancy hitting the road with your mates. However, the absence of a third seatbelt in the back rules out the possibility cramming any more bodies in, even if you don't mind a tight squeeze. For such a small car the boot is fairly capacious, offering 185 litres of luggage space and the option of 550 litres if you fold the back seats down.
The 500 smashed its NCAP crash test, scoring a maximum 5 out of 5 back in 2007. It's worth bearing in mind however that NCAP tests are said to be more stringent these days and there's a chance that the 500 might lag a bit behind recent top scoring competitors like the Skoda Fabia and Ford Fiesta. All models come with skid-reducing anti-lock brakes and seven airbags as standard.
