Dream winter road trips

Dream winter road trips

When it comes to winter driving, there are so many places I’d love to go driving in this cold and frosty season! Give me a 4x4 truck, a shovel, a blanket, and some hot cocoa and I’m all set. First winter road trip I think of is Iceland; having previously visited Iceland, I would love to go back, hire a truck and drive around hunting down the northern lights! When I went, I just jumped on a coach to all the places I wanted to go to so I didn’t get to really experience the beautiful country properly. Exploring the volcanos and geysers, frozen waterfalls and giant glaciers is the best way to spend your time!

Another road trip would be Alaska, similar to Iceland with all the ice and snow but being in the mountains with a little warm, wooden lodge waiting for me after a long days drive through the forests is the most wonderful thing I can imagine! I would love to just drive and build a snowman every time I stop, just because I can. Driving on a lovely, open road surrounded by beautiful snowy mountains and thick forest is great for the mind. I find if I’m stressed, I just jump in my car and drive. Of course, I check my fuel gauge first!

A road trip closer to home? I’d love to spend the week between Christmas and new year exploring the Scottish highlands. I haven’t been that far up north before so it would be great to see it in person, instead of just photos. I also think my partner and I would have great fun driving around the Scottish highlands mountain roads which are known to be breathtakingly beautiful. Scotland has some of the best roads in the U.K. and I am very eager to go and drive them.

Or if I’ve had enough and need to get away from the freezing cold, I’d either go drive around California or head to Australia and explore the Aussie outback! Renting an RV and travelling around would be absolutely awesome!

Of course, on any road trip, you need to pack the essentials just in case you get stuck out in the cold. A must for me is a blanket and a can of de-icer, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been stuck in a traffic jam in the middle of winter in my first car! It was so old and I am always trying to save fuel so I’d just wrap the blanket around me if we were at a standstill! The de-icer is needed in the mornings and sometimes at night, it’s also handy to keep some in the house just in case your car locks are frozen. I’ve had this happen to me a couple of times! Oops! And NEVER pour boiling hot water onto your windows! It can cause your glass to break, making it a very expensive de-icer! If anything, if you like to get away quickly in the mornings, cover your windscreen with an old towel or special cover to prevent the build-up of ice.

Road trips in the winter should be enjoyable but just be aware, road surfaces change depending on the weather so watch out for the black ice and super foggy mornings. Always check your tyre tread and that your lights are in working order.

Where would you go if you had the chance? Or if you go on a road trip this winter, tweet us and let us know!
